Addiction Rehab
Information
There are so many different
drug rehab treatment program
options that trying to make
a decision during a
difficult time makes it
almost overwhelming. We
provide trained counselors
who can go over your
options, from long-term to
short-term treatments,
in-patent and out-patient,
different philosophies
behind the different
treatment programs as well
as the costs involved.
The state of Louisiana
provides several drug and
alcohol rehab programs for
adults and adolescents. With
so many choices, one would
think it wouldn't be too
difficult to select a
program, but you would be
wrong. There are just about
as many drug rehab treatment
philosophies as there are
drug and alcohol rehab
centers.
Some programs do not offer
drug detox programs and thus
refer out for this addiction
treatment service. Others
believe addiction is a
disease forever leaving the
addict in a problem
stripping them of their
freedom of choice to
overcome addiction and
sentencing them to a
lifetime of alcoholism or
being a drug addict and
thus, opening the door to
relapse.
Another aspect of selecting
a drug rehab treatment
program is whether the user
should attend a program
close to home or not.
Sometimes selecting a
program far from home is key
to success especially when
choosing long-term inpatient
treatment programs. This
provides a "trigger-free"
environment which distances
the individual from negative
reinforcements for their
addictive behavior.

Louisiana Drug Use
Information
|
|
According
to the DEA (U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration),
cocaine, primarily crack, is the predominant drug
threat in Louisiana. The threat is derived from the
high rate of addiction and violence associated with
the drug. Cocaine is widely available and frequently
distributed across the state. Cocaine abuse is
reported in the metropolitan cities and rural areas.
The abuse and distribution of cocaine is associated
with many incidents involving violent crimes.
Methamphetamine continues to be a major drug threat
in Louisiana. Law enforcement reporting indicates
that, in some areas, methamphetamine is replacing
crack cocaine as the primary drug threat due to its
availability, low cost and long lasting effects.
Methamphetamine production and distribution
generates violent crimes and hazardous conditions.
Marijuana continues to be the most commonly abused
drug in Louisiana and reports indicate that it is
the gateway drug for teens and young adults to
experiment with other illicit drugs. High-grade
marijuana is available due to modern indoor
cultivation techniques. Locally grown marijuana is
usually intended for local consumption; however, the
cheaper Mexico-produced product has made local
production less profitable.
Heroin is considered a low drug threat in most of
Louisiana, except in New Orleans, primarily due to
availability and cost.
Though most drugs are either declining or holding
steady in their abuse or distribution, "Club Drug"
abuse and distribution among teenagers and young
adults is on the rise in Louisiana.
The abuse of pharmaceutical drugs continues to rise
at an alarming rate. Law enforcement officials
report OxyContin, hydrocodone and Xanax abuse
continues to be a viable threat. Pharmaceutical
drugs are diverted as a means of distribution into
the illicit market. Abusers and distributors acquire
pharmaceutical drugs via prescription forgeries
and/or “doctor shopping” in the diversion process. |

The
life cycle of addiction begins with a problem,
discomfort or some form of emotional or physical
pain a person is experiencing. The person finds this
very difficult to deal with.
Once the person takes a
drug, he feels relief from the discomfort, even
though the relief is only temporary. That drink or
drug is adopted as a solution to the problem and the
individual places value on the substance. (complete

National Drug Threat Summary
|
|
The
National Drug Intelligence Center
National Drug Threat Assessment
The
trafficking and abuse of illicit
drugs inflict tremendous harm upon
individuals, families, and
communities throughout the country.
The violence, intimidation, theft,
and financial crimes carried out by
drug trafficking organizations (DTOs),
criminal groups, gangs, and drug
users in the United States pose a
significant threat to our nation.
The cost to society from drug
production, trafficking, and abuse
is difficult to fully measure or
convey; however, the most recent
data available are helpful in
framing the extent of the threat.
For example:
-
More than 35 million individuals
used illicit drugs or abused
prescription drugs in 2007.
-
In 2006 individuals entered
public drug treatment facilities
more than 1 million times
seeking assistance in ending
their addiction to illicit or
prescription drugs.
-
More than 1,100 children were
injured at, killed at, or
removed from methamphetamine
laboratory sites from 2007
through September 2008.
-
For 2009 the federal government
has allocated more than $14
billion for drug treatment and
prevention, counterdrug law
enforcement, drug interdiction,
and international counterdrug
assistance.
-
In September 2008 there were
nearly 100,000 inmates in
federal prisons convicted and
sentenced for drug offenses,
representing more than 52
percent of all federal
prisoners.
-
In 2007 more than 1.8 million
drug-related arrests in the
United States were carried out
by federal, state, and local law
enforcement agencies.
-
Mexican and Colombian DTOs
generate, remove, and launder
between $18 billion and $39
billion in wholesale drug
proceeds annually.
-
Diversion of controlled
prescription drugs costs
insurance companies up to $72.5
billion annually, nearly
two-thirds of which is paid by
public insurers.
