Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine addiction should be taken very seriously.  Not only can a person's health deteriorate with continued use, but they could suffer severe consequences, even death.  To make matters even worse, cocaine is one of the hardest drug addictions to overcome.  Cocaine is a serious stimulant which potentially could cause addiction after one use.  While most people do not become addicted, the potential is there. The bigger story behind cocaine addiction and abuse is the devastation it causes one's family, relationships, work and the user's alienation in general.  As one uses cocaine more and more their whole life starts to evolve around it.   When is their next fix?  How will they be able to pay for it? Cocaine use becomes more important than anything including keeping one's job after while and so the dwindling spiral begins.

Cocaine AddictDo not underestimate cocaine cravings.  They overtake the addict and nothing will seem as important as finding another line, or shooting up their next dose.

For family members of a cocaine addict, it does not make sense that the drug has become their top priority.  Sometimes an intervention may be necessary to get the addict to admit to their addiction.  If you need help or advice, we can help.  Call to speak with one of our trained counselors.  All information will be kept confidential and we'll take the time to explain the best treatment options available in your specific case. Call (877) 502-1065.  Don't put it off.  There is no cost or obligation.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports that in 2008, 5.3 million Americans age 12 and older had abused cocaine in any form and 1.1 million had abused crack at least once in the year prior to being surveyed.

Cocaine addicts can spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on cocaine weekly. The cost of cocaine varies from year to year and from dealer to dealer as the purity of the product may vary.

Cocaine addiction treatment

There are many different cocaine treatment philosophies but most will agree that short-term programs will not be beneficial. If the addict has completed some other program including a 12-step program but yet relapsed, it is usually due to the fact that the user never fully handled the cravings.  A detoxification program helps to end the cravings by eliminating the drug residues in the body.

Our counselors can go over the options available to the cocaine addict. Call (877) 502- 1065 and we can answer your questions and help find the proper program for the addict.

What is cocaine?

Cocaine is a Schedule II drug, which is to say, under the Controlled Substance Act of 1970, cocaine has a high potential for abuse, but it has limited use when administered by a doctor for legitimate medical uses, such as local anesthesia for some eye, ear, and throat surgeries.  Otherwise, cocaine is illegal to possess, use or distribute here in the United States.

Cocaine is derived from cocoa leaves. Most cocaine is harvested in South America with .Columbia being the world's leading producer.

How is cocaine used?

Users either chop up the powder and snort it so it can be absorbed through the mucous membranes of the nose, or convert it into liquid by mixing cocaine with water and then use a needle to shoot it up intravenously, or they smoke it after converting it to a "freebase" and inhale the fumes or  smoke into the lungs.  "Freebase" refers to the base form of cocaine as oppose to the salt form.

What is crack cocaine?

Crack cocaine is the street name for cocaine which is processed by treating the cocaine hydrochloride with sodium bicarbonate to create ready-to-use small chips for smoking.  Crack refers to the crackling sound heard when the mixture is heated during the process of converting the powder into crack cocaine.  All these methods of abusing cocaine can lead to addiction.

How does cocaine effect the body?

Cocaine is a nervous system stimulant and depending upon the method of ingestion can last from 15-30 minutes to an hour.

Cocaine creates a feeling of euphoria and increases alertness and energy and motor activity which can result in a feeling of competence and sexuality.   The faster the absorption, the more intense the high.

Short-term effects include decreased appetite, increased heart rate, increased temperature, dilated pupils, constricted blood vessels, mental alertness and increased energy.

With large amounts of cocaine being ingested the user may become paranoid, experience  hallucinations, and become violent experiencing erratic behavior as well as possible vertigo, muscle twitches and tremors.  Death from cocaine use usually is a result of cardiac arrest or seizures followed by respiratory arrest.

Cocaine can also cause feelings of anxiety and depression which can last for weeks.  Those trying to stop using the drug will sometimes fail due to the overwhelming depression, thus they turn back to the drug which causes short-term euphoria though it gets harder to achieve the same effect with continues abuse.

Chronic users become malnourished due to the decrease in appetite.

Another adverse effect is when alcohol is consumed while abusing cocaine.  The combination of the two produce a third substance, cocaethylene, which intensifies cocaine's euphoric effect, but also is associated with a greater risk of sudden death.

Sleep and Cocaine Abuse

Chronic cocaine abusers may feel they are sleeping better and better during early abstinence, but objective measures show the opposite happens. A team of NIDA-funded addiction and sleep researchers at the Yale and Harvard Schools of Medicine found evidence of insomnia, with learning and attentional deficits, on days of taking the drug and after 2.5 weeks of abstinence. The researchers believe cocaine may impair the brain's ability to gauge its own need for sleep, and patients' ability to benefit from early treatment may suffer as a result.

"Problems in memory and attention are linked with increased treatment dropout and likely affect patients' ability to 'take in' lessons from drug abuse counseling," says Dr. Robert Malison of Yale, a co-investigator on the study. If the results are confirmed, clinicians and patients may want to consider addressing sleep disorders in early therapy, perhaps with the use of medications or behavioral treatments.

Signs of Cocaine Addiction and Use

If you suspect someone you know is abusing cocaine and may be addicted and need help, you can look for these signs:

Lack of money.  A cocaine addict can easily go through hundreds of dollars worth of cocaine in a single night.  When addicted, people have been known to use their rent or mortgage money for the drug.  Addicts have been known to lie about their money problems and borrow, even steal from their family and friends for their next line or fix.

Physically, there are a number of tell tell signs such as weight loss.  Cocaine is an appetite suppressant so the user can go all day without having the urge to eat.. When addicted, food is the least of their worries. Look for stuffy, bloody or runny rose, dilated pupils and bloodshot eyes.

The cocaine addict will lie about where they've been and what they've been doing.  With this addiction the person may go missing for hours at a time and sometimes days, weeks and even longer.

The cocaine abuser tends to have problem with motor skills, they may have tremors or act extremely hyper.  The user will speak rapidly or appear fidgety.  While on high doses of cocaine, they may exhibit odd behavior such as anxiety and panic attacks as well as irritability.

The cocaine abuser tends to sleeps odd hours. Cocaine addicts feel they need less sleep; however, after they crash from using, they may need sleep at hours not normal for that person.

Check for paraphernalia such as rolled paper for snorting (money is commonly used) or straws, razors blades, mirrors and other smooth surfaces. Smoking includes a glass pipe.  If injecting, syringes, needles, spoons and bandannas or belts for constricting veins.
